Tote, Crossbody or Shoulder Bag? A Simple Guide to Crochet Bag Types
Three shapes, three completely different everyday lives. Here is what each crochet bag type is really for, in plain words, so you buy the one that fits your days.
People ask me for a bag. I always ask back: which kind? Because a tote and a crossbody are not the same bag in different sizes — they are different tools. Here is the honest breakdown.
The tote: the everyday workhorse
A granny-square tote is the one most people picture. Wide opening, roomy, sits on the shoulder. It is for the days you carry a bit of everything — a book, a bottle, a small notebook, the things a full day needs. The trade-off: an open top means you see straight in, so it suits places you feel relaxed more than a packed metro.
The crossbody: hands free, mind easy
A crossbody is smaller by design and that is the point. It holds your phone, keys, cards and a lipstick, sits close to the body and leaves both hands free. It is the bag for travel, markets, a long walk, a day where you want to carry little and worry about nothing. If you have ever spent a trip clutching your bag, this is the shape for you.
The shoulder bag: the neat in-between
A short-handled shoulder bag carries more than a crossbody, less than a tote, and looks tidy doing it. Held in the hand or on the elbow, it is the one you reach for when you are not hauling a whole day around — a dinner, a coffee, an afternoon out. It is the quietly elegant option.
How to actually decide
Do not choose the shape you find prettiest. Choose the one that matches how you already move. If you overpack, tote. If you travel light and hate worrying, crossbody. If you want neat and just-enough, shoulder. And if you love more than one — well, they each earn their place. I own all three for exactly that reason.
