Why I Make in Istanbul, Not Import
The cotton is Turkish, the hands are mine, and the studio is a twenty-minute ferry ride from the Bosphorus. Here is what that actually changes about the bag you receive.
Most "handmade" shops on marketplaces today are drop-shipped from large workshops overseas and relabelled. I want to be specific about why that's not what happens here.
The cotton is sourced in Turkey
Turkey has one of the world's strongest cotton-growing and mercerising industries — it's a genuine local advantage, not a marketing line. I buy from Turkish yarn suppliers, which means shorter shipping for the raw material, a supply chain I can actually verify, and colours dyed to the standards the local textile industry has refined for decades.
One maker, not a workshop line
Every bag on this shop passes through one set of hands, from the first chain to the last stitch. That's slower than a small workshop splitting the work across several crocheters, but it means the tension, the shaping instincts, and the quality checks are consistent from bag to bag, because they're all coming from the same judgment.
Istanbul specifically, not "Turkey" generically
I work from a studio on the Asian side, a short ferry ride from the old city. That matters for two practical reasons: the local market culture here means direct, in-person feedback from customers who come to see the work before they buy, and the city's textile district means I can walk to a supplier the same afternoon I need something, instead of waiting on an import order.
What this changes for you
A bag made this way costs more than a mass-produced import and takes longer to arrive. In exchange, the stitching is consistent, the materials are traceable, and the maker is one identifiable person who will answer a message directly if something is wrong — not a support queue.
The honest trade-off
If you need a bag next week for a low price, this shop isn't the fastest or cheapest option, and that's fine. If you want a bag that was actually made by hand, from Turkish cotton, by someone who'll stand behind it personally, that's what's on offer here.
